Chris’s Invincible Super-Blog names calls “Incredible Hulk” #106 the “Book of the Week”

An excerpt:

… the Mastermind Excello story he did with the incredibly talented Takeshi Miyazawa Amazing Fantasy #15 (reprinted for your convenience in this week’s World War Hulk Prologue) was the first thing of [writer Greg] Pak’s that I read and absolutely loved, so the idea that Amadeus Cho was going to be a huge part of the Hulk’s return to Earth and subsequent six-month non-stop beat-down already had me excited. Imagine my surprise, then, when the execution of the first part was even better than I’d imagined.

CBR interviews Greg Pak about “World War Hulk”

Writer Greg Pak talks with ComicBookResource.com’s Dave Richards about the end of “Planet Hulk” and the upcoming “World War Hulk” Marvel Comics event — and drops some hints about who might appear in the “Incredible Hulk” tie-in issues. An excerpt:

On Earth, one person sympathetic to the Hulk has been paying close attention to the outcome of “Civil War.” “Amadeus Cho, AKA Mastermind Excello, a genius kid on the run from a nefarious secret agency, had a close encounter with the Hulk back in ‘Amazing Fantasy’ (v2) #15. Amadeus became a huge Hulk advocate and confronted Reed Richards over the Illuminati’s exiling of the Hulk in ‘Incredible Hulk’ #100,” Pak stated. “The end of the Civil War has only confirmed Amadeus’s suspicion of and contempt for the government and the superheroes that toe the party line. He’ll play a big role in the ‘World War Hulk’ event — primarily in ‘Incredible Hulk’#106 to #109. His goal is to round up the heroes with the guts to side with the Hulk upon his return. We’ll see him confront She-Hulk and Doc Samson in ‘Incredible Hulk’ #106, find out what’s up with Namor in #107, and learn how Amadeus’s team of Renegades deals with the terrifying reality of the Hulk’s return in #108 and #109. Issue #109 will be particularly significant, with a pretty spectacular Hulk-related revelation — dontcha dare miss it!”

EyeOnComics.com on “Incredible Hulk” #100

Don MacPherson particularly liked the backup story featuring Amadeus Cho, aka Mastermind Excello. Here’s an excerpt from the review:

Mastermind Excello is a wonderful character. Not only is he defined by his intellect, but he’s a youthful rebel. … [Greg] Pak’s script not only paints him as a genius, but as something of an innocent whose perspective manages to cut through politics and shades of grey. If Marvel doesn’t direct Pak to do more with this wonderful character, and soon, it’s wasting some great potential.

WizardUniverse.com has posted an extensive interview with writer Greg Pak about his “Planet Hulk” story in the “Incredible Hulk” comic book. The interview features on giant piece of news which should interest fans of Mastermind Excello:

What’s coming up in the 100th issue?
PAK: It’s the first issue in the climactic “Allegiance” storyline, featuring incredible action and some shocking emotional developments for the Hulk and his key allies. There’s also a 10-page backup story that gives us a glimpse of what’s happening on Planet Earth. And I’ll go ahead and spill the beans. Issue #100 will feature a few surprise guest stars, including Reed Richards and Amadeus Cho, a.k.a. Mastermind Excello. Who the heck is that, you ask? He’s a character I developed for the Amazing Fantasy #15 anthology issue, and he won the online contest Marvel.com ran to see which character from the anthology would get his or her own miniseries. In the Amazing Fantasy story, Amadeus Cho is a genius kid on the run who has an unexpected encounter with our big green friend. As we’ll see in Incredible Hulk #100, Amadeus may end up playing a very important role in the Hulk’s future…

ComixFan.com interview with Greg Pak: “Hulk,” “Phoenix,” and “Mastermind Excello”

ComixFan.com has posted an interview with writer Greg Pak about upcoming projects, including “Planet Hulk,” “X-Men: Phoenix – Warsong,” and Mastermind Excello. An excerpt:

Comixfan: Now on to some Planet Hulk related questions. Part one of Planet Hulk just came to an end and Anarchy is fast approaching. Are there any details you can share on what to expect in the upcoming issues?
Greg Pak: If the Exile story arc of Planet Hulk was Star Wars, the Anarchy arc is The Empire Strikes Back. Just as thrilling, but darker and deeper. We’re learning more about the horrors of the Emperor’s rule, the mythic role the Hulk seems destined to play, and how their growing rage is affecting the Hulk and his crew. Big, big things are in store for several of the supporting characters — Miek, the four-armed Native, and Caiera, the gray-skinned female Shadow Guard Lieutenant, in particular. They’re going to become major characters in the Hulk’s life — keep an eye on ‘em! And of course, the smashing continues.

Mastermind Excello, aka Amadeus Cho, wins the “Amazing Fantasy” poll!

Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada spills the beans in his “New Joe Fridays” Q&A session at Newsarama:

NRAMA: “Dash-Dot” – Whatever happened to the Marvel Poll to decide which character from Amazing Fantasy #15 would appear in their own series? Is that still planned? Who won?
JQ: The winner was Greg Pak’s revision of Mastermind Excello, a teen genius who met the Hulk in his AMFAN short story.
I think you’ll see Greg’s Excello costarring in one of his stories.

Captain Asian America! Jeff Yang interviews Pak and others on Asian Americans in comics

Jeff Yang has written an amazing, in-depth article for SFGate about Asian Americans in comics featuring interviews with Larry Hama and Greg Pak and in-depth discussion of Asian American superheroes, including Pak’s Captain Asian America and Mastermind Excello. An excerpt:

“I had this idea of doing a story about an insanely smart kid, but one who wasn’t a reject or dork or geek,” says Pak. “It was a way of turning that whole Asian brainiac stereotype on its head. One way to do it is to go against type, to create Asian American characters that are jocks or stoners or thugs or whatever. But another way is to not run away from the stereotype — to embrace it, but present a character like that as having an incredible level of confidence, having just this verve, this lack of self-consciousness.”
Comics reviewers raved about “Mastermind Excello” — and when they did, more often than not they barely even mentioned that the lead character was Asian. And that, to Pak, is the point.
