If it were just big, action-packed, melodramatic, funny fun The Incredible Hercules would still be well worth a reader’s time, but co-writers Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente don’t just stop there. This concludes the opening story arc of the Herc-hijacked book, and it does an incisive, even touching job of defining the characters of Hercules and Amadeus Cho. That it happens to also be a blast to read is just a bonus. This has very quickly become my favorite Marvel comic.

It’s great that Marvel was able to take the momentum Hercules gathered from Civil War and make it into one of their best ongoing series. The issue is filled with great humor, great character interactions, absolutely fantastic action (the list of badass things Ares has done grows longer) and a really nice moment where Hercules explains the true story of one of the old myths about him. I can’t say enough good things about this series.

Writers Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente give a behind-the-scenes analysis of the first six pages of “Incredible Hercules” at BrokenFrontier.com. Here’s an excerpt from the discussion of Page 6:

GP: I know it’s a cheap gag, but God help me, I love having Amadeus pull the Bugs Bunny trick on Herc here. I tend to throw in a lot of these goofball moments into the scripts. Fred likes cutting about half of ‘em out, which is probably a good example of just why we’re so well matched on this book — unhesitantly saving each other from each other’s own foibles! Heeey… kinda like Amadeus and Herc, huh?
FVL: I think I’m as smart as Amadeus, but I also drink as much as Herc, so I’m not sure which one I would be.
GP: All we say for sure is that if Fred and I weren’t co-writing this book, one of us would be a super-villain.
FVL: Or we’d both be “co-super-villains.”
