A Tribute to Stephane Peru

Today’s “Pak Talks Comics” column at BrokenFrontier.com is a tribute to Stephane Peru, the brilliant “Incredible Hercules” colorist who passed away over the weekend.
“Incredible Hercules” writers Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente, editors Mark Paniccia and Nate Cosby, and penciller Khoi Pham show off five gorgeously colored pages from “Incredible Hercules” #114 and discuss sky textures, embers and ash, pink convertibles, and the greatness of Stephane Peru.

Godspeed, Stephane Peru

I’ve just gotten word from Marvel editor Nate Cosby that Stephane Peru, the brilliant colorist of “Incredible Hercules,” has died. Stephane brought deep aesthetic sensitivity and boundless humor to his work, making every email he sent us a joy to receive and every page we gave him simultaneously funnier and more heroic. My deepest condolences to Stephane’s friends and family.
— Greg Pak
UPDATE: Newsarama has posted a story with quotes from a number of Stephane’s colleagues and collaborators.

Greg Pak shares Best Writer kudos at PulpFictionOnline.com

Mike Guardabascio at PulpFictionOnline has dubbed Greg Pak and Ed Brubaker as the year’s best mainstream comic book writers. Here’s the blurb about Pak:

No question about it, nobody turned in more solid performances than these two guys this year, in mainstream books at least. Greg Pak changed the tenor of big events with his universe-spanning Planet Hulk epic, followed by the spectacular World War Hulk, which was marketed as its own event but which reads much better as a sequel to PH. Pak did an event with characters true to their cores (unlike Civil War), that improved a major character without retconning or changing him too much. Pak’s Hulk is spectacular, and not to be missed.

Newsarama interviews Pak and Van Lente on “Hulk Versus Hercules”

Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente are co-writing a one-shot for Marvel Comics entitled “Hulk Versus Hercules: When Titans Clash” — and Newsarama has the scoop! Here’s an excerpt:

GP: Part of the story ties directly into Incredible Hercules #116 and sets up some themes and elements of the “Sacred Invasion” crossover which will follow in Incredible Hercules #117 to #120. And part of the story fits right into a classic Bill Mantlo “Incredible Hulk” tale from the 1980s. I’ll say no more, other than to plug the thrilling fact that you’ll see the Hulk as he hasn’t been seen for a long, long time, and it will be awesome.
FVL: One of the things that people seem to be reacting really positively to in the pages of Incredible Hercules is how we’ve brought Greek mythology into the modern-day Marvel universe, and here we’re kind of doing the same thing, but in reverse.
Let’s just say Olympus is gong to need a new interior decorator. Damn quick.
